Cycling Along Esplanade

Flix 04/02/2008, 2:14 PM

I have just witnessed a head-on collision between 2 cyclists near Claremont Pier. At the risk of sounding 'naggy', could I please remind cyclists to wear helmets.

I agree with you Flix. Helmets are looked upon is being "Sissy" but cyclists need to realise that it is so easy to tumble off a bicycle. What a dreadful thing to happen. I hope they were both OK. Without any protection for your head you are risking having a far greater serious outcome from any accident you might have.WHY do parents let thier children ride without helmets? Can they not see the DANGERS?

In the accident I mentioned, both cyclists were men not children. But of course you're right, Suffolk Boy, the plea for helmets applies to all age groups.

In this particular accident, both men, once sufficiently recovered, rejected my offer of summoning Medical help. However I'm sure, at least one of them had a very nasty headache later & was possibly concussed.

What a great idea it is to be able to cycle along the Esplanade. So much better than having to travel on main roads. Let's hope there are no more incidents like this.        Sad [:(]

I've just returned from a winter weekend break in Barcelona.  It was great to see how pedestrians and cyclists mixed and mingled in such a sensitive way along pathways .  Although cycle paths were clearly marked the system was flexible and pedestrains often used the cycle paths and vise versa.   Best of all there were thousands of bicycles available for locals to use, provided by the local council for 8 Euros per year.  Sadly these were not available for tourists, else I would have been on one.

Sounds great but my experience of using the cycle paths in lowestoft is not always very positive. I think I am a considerate cyclist but have come across adults who seem to take offence if you ring your bell just to let alert them that you are using the cycle lane. My husband and I have often cycled in Europe where it seems much more geared up (forgive the pun...) for people on bikes.

We surely just need everyone on the Esplanade to use a little more common sense?

At least neither of these men fell under the wheels of a car.

I've cycled miles along the board walks in America where pedestrians, cyclists, skaterboarders and general skaters mix.  Common sense is of course essential .  It will take a while to establish this cultural mix here but when it happens its a joy.  I'm middle aged I suppose but to see the mix of OAP's and teenages sharing common space is what we need in this country.  Sure we may have teething trouble but please lets stick with it.

Maybe some Esplanade cyclists don't understand what common sense is? Walking on the Esplanade this morning, I saw one cyclist using his mobile phone, another a middle-aged woman, belting along for all she was worth & a third, who swooped round from the side of the Hatfield, wearing headphones!

Hi Pippa ,

i dont think we have problems here , its just we have to get used to mixing together, Cyclists and pedestrians , old and young.

I was looking for cycling info in the Lowestoft area and came across the Esplanade postings.  Good to see that I can cycle there when I visit next weekend.  Yes, I will have a bell (loud) and will be wearing a helmet.  I strongly disagree with compulsory helmets - the case is not proven.  Compulsion will only cause even less active cycling with the adverse knock ons to fitness and car usage.  I'd agree with compulsory bells if also pedestrians were not permitted to plug their ears with Ipod earphones.
