Take care walking your dog near Carlton Marshes
I just want to warn people to take care when walking their dogs on the field off Beccles Road, near Carlton Marshes. Last Monday despite reassurances from the owner that her dog was friendly, my 16 week old puppy was attacked by her Rottweiler.  The lady seemed unable to control her dog at this moment. My puppy was bitten through the leg muscle and I received a small bite to my hand as I tried to get my dog free. What should have been an enjoyable walk resulted in a vet bill and a very shocked puppy.

As a Rottie owner for a number of years I can say that it is very uncommon for a Rottie to actually make the first move in terms of aggressive action.

Was your dog on a lead and did it approach the Rottie, this doesnt excuse the Rottie but it would go some way to understanding the attack.

Rather than just posting this notice on this forum did you also report this incident to the Police ?

Hi George,

Yes my puppy was on a lead (always is) as was the Rottie. I had pulled my dog off to one side to let them pass as he is a  boisterous puppy and wants to play with everyone, but the lady assured me her dog was totally friendly, one sniff between the dogs and all hell let lose. All dogs can fight and I was not having a go because the dog was a Rottie, the point I was making was that the lady concerned was not able to control her dog. Have you any idea how frightening it is being in the middle of a field trying to fight off such a large dog because the owner cannot control their dog and your dog is screaming the place down. Luckily his injuries have healed.

I did not report the incident to the police as the lady left without giving any details and it took me over half an hour to carry my dog home as his could not walk and to get him to our vets for treatment.

Just to update - was talking to a lady last week whose dog was attacked recently on the same field by an off lead Rotweiller - her dog was badly injured on his back. She had not been able to establish whose dog this is, If you have had a bad experience with an off lead Rotweiller please let us know. If you are the owner of the dog, please get it some training and do not off lead your dog until it is safe around other dogs.

I think that the warning might also be directed at folk walking their young children.

The Broads is the Broads, much more than just a national park.

There is no such thing as a "bad" dog just bad ownership and poor management.

I am a canine behaviour consultant and work as a volunteer foster mum for unwanted, abandoned and abused dogs and I have to agree that certain breeds of dog are often given an unjustified bad reputation when in fact they are poorly managed by inexperienced and naive owners who take on dogs that require specific training and guidance.
