Benacre gravel pits
Does anyone know the date & origen of the gravel pits at Benacre ? I've lived in Kessingland & Lowestoft for 44 years & frequently played & walked there as a boy, watching them slowly wash away so only one now remains. When I was a boy in the 1970s there was 3 lakes. I've seen that on the c.1903 O.S. map they were not there & then by the 1953 map there were 4. I can only speculate that they may have begun as a source of building aggregate for world war two defences &/or the Kessingland sea wall. Do any of you know more, or even had relative or yourselves who worked on them or defended the area during the war? MmmCustard Pakefield

Re: Benacre gravel pits
I have seen these 'pits/broads' eroding away and the cliffs over the past few years. I do not know the origins of the pits except that there are the brick and concrete foundations scattered near to the pits with a few concrete pill boxes still existing and a concrete road [maybe one used for tanks/transporters in WWII leading up to the River Hundred River sluice, with the ever advancing tides then may I suggest that in a few short years these pits and Benacre Broad may well disappear

On my trips to the area I have taken several photos some of which can be found here
