An addict who strangled his 82-year-old mother in a bid to get her to give him money to buy drugs has been banned from contacting her for the next 10 years.

Darryl Hood, 54, a former heroin addict who lived with his mum and bed-bound father, wanted money from his mother to buy drugs as his benefits were paid into her bank account.

Norwich Crown Court heard Hood burst in while his mother, who has a lock on her door to keep Hood out, was washing up in the kitchen and "grabbed her round the throat" with one hand.

He said to her that "he wanted his f*****g money".

"He gripped her so tightly she thought it was the end".

The victim gave Hood some money and he left to buy drugs.

The court heard about another occasion when Hood found out about a £150 winter heating payment and demanded to have it, telling his mother he "wanted the money".

The victim felt she had "no choice" but to give him the money after being strangled previously.

Hood, formerly of Normandy Road, Lowestoft, appeared in court for sentencing having admitted intentional strangulation on September 23 last year.

He also admitted to engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, common assault, in relation to an attack on his nephew who also lived at the property, possession of amphetamine, and obstruction of a police officer.

The court heard the victim has "had enough" of her son's behaviour and "wants peace in the later part of her life".

She now hates Hood and "doesn't want the defendant back in her home".

Jailing Hood, for 49 months, Recorder Nicola Fitches said Hood had caused his mum to "fear violence so many times that she was at breaking point" adding that he "could've killed" his mother.

Rob Pollington, mitigating, said Hood had accepted responsibility for his offending and was "ashamed and appalled by his actions".

He said he has been addicted to drugs as a result of "previous trauma" he had suffered and used them as an "escape".

Hood was also banned from contacting his mother, directly or indirectly, for the next 10 years.
