A seven-bedroom property could be turned into housing for asylum seekers, provided plans get the go-ahead.

A second scheme has been lodged that could see another house in Lowestoft converted into a house of multiple occupancy (HMO) property for asylum seekers.

After a scheme - which is still "awaiting decision" with East Suffolk Council - was lodged last month for conversion of a six-bedroom residential property on Milton Road East to an eight bed HMO, plans were submitted this week for a house on London Road South, Kirkley in Lowestoft.

Change of use plans could see a "mid terrace property" at 47 London Road South converted into a nine-bedroom HMO property "providing accommodation for asylum seekers".

Plans centring around "Change of use from residential dwelling (C3) to nine bedroom House of Multiple Occupancy (sui generis) including conversion of existing roof space, formation of dormers to rear and insertion of velux roof windows to front elevation" at 47 London Road South is "awaiting decision" with the council.

A design and access statement submitted by agents Principle Design, on behalf of the applicant Patrice Elonge, seeks to change the residential property into a house of multiple occupancy.

It states: "The proposals includes the reconfiguration of the existing accommodation at ground, first and second floor level and the conversion of the existing loft space.

"The development will result in a nine-bedroom house of multiple occupancy, fully refurbished to a high level.

"The current condition of 47 London Road South is poor and run down.

"The applicant intends to use the property as accommodation for asylum seekers.

"It is the intent of the applicant that this property, once converted, will be handed over to Serco who will fully manage and maintain the property, providing accommodation for asylum seekers.

"At present, the tired and run down appearance of the unoccupied 47 London Road South has a detrimental and negative effect on the conservation area, London Road Heritage Action Zone and surrounding residents.

"An approval of this application will provide this unused building with a sustainable use."
