The next phase of planning for the demolition of a Lowestoft car park has been unanimously approved.

An application for prior notification for the Battery Green car park was passed by councillors sitting on the Waveney District Council Planning Committee last night.

The application said: “Despite regular repair, undertaken by the council, the concrete structure of the four-storey building has been deteriorating for many years, with structural flaws appearing in the concrete.”

The council announced the closure of the car park in December 2016, with the facility finally closing on March 31 this year.

There is still no indication of what will replace the car park.

The application continued: “No plans have been forthcoming to indicate what this redevelopment will entail.

“Whilst this does constitute a loss of a community facility there are no significant or material planning considerations in relation to the demolition of the structure itself or the process of granting prior notification in this particular instance.”
