A town councillor has been getting his hands dirty by helping with much-needed maintenance at an amateur dramatics society’s theatre.

The Lowestoft Players may have just turned 50-years-old, but the Bethel on Battery Green is well over 100.

Since being purchased in 2009, the property has gradually been transformed and repurposed but, with more and more community groups using the facility, a further plot of land was gifted to the Players in 2016.

With Lowestoft Town Council having granted the company funds to consolidate its new site, councillor Dick Houghton was inspired by their long-term efforts and offered his free labour for the time-consuming graft of re-pointing some decayed brickwork.

Joined by his son Patrick, Mr Houghton has been at the site several times this week to lend a helping hand.

In the long-term, the Players hope to raise sufficient funds to enable a multi-storey expansion of the theatre onto the new land.
