Investigations by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) began earlier this year after the death of father-of three Paul Gladwell, also known as Paul Reynolds.

The 38-year-old was detained by staff at Pontins Holiday Park in Pakefield at 11.40pm on February 14 after what is believed to be an altercation with another guest.

Suffolk Police were called to the site and Mr Gladwell was arrested on suspicion of assault.

While being transported to Great Yarmouth Police Investigation Centre police officers became concerned for his wellbeing.

They stopped the police van and contacted an ambulance.

Mr Gladwell was treated at the scene and taken to James Paget University Hospital in Gorleston in a critical condition.

However, following a CT scan he was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge.

Mr Gladwell was pronounced dead on Thursday, February 16.

A spokesman for the IPCC said: “The independent IPCC investigation launched following the death of Paul Reynolds, also known as Paul Gladwell, is progressing well.

“Three police officers have been interviewed under criminal caution and work has begun on the final report.”

The spokesman added: “That a person is interviewed under criminal caution is in no way an indication of guilt, or that any form of disciplinary action will be taken.”

Suffolk Police is currently conducting a parallel investigation into the actions of the security staff involved in detaining Mr Gladwell until the officers arrived.

Mr Gladwell, from Colchester, had been staying at the Pontins site as part of a family holiday.

It is believed the fight began following an argument with another holidaymaker over allegations of bullying towards Mr Gladwell’s son.

When a relative of Mr Gladwell’s partner broke the news of his death on Facebook in February, more than 1,000 people expressed their grief and shock.

One person wrote: “Heaven has gained another angel, so sad. Such a loving and caring man, took me in when I lost everything and supported a roof over my head, words cannot describe how heartbroken I am for you.”
