A district ward in Waveney has been retained by the Conservatives following a by-election.

People living in Oulton Broad had the chance to vote for a new district councillor yesterday (Thursday, September 21), after the sudden death of influential former council leader Colin Law in May.

Keith Robinson, who is also a Suffolk County councillor, retained the seat for the Conservatives after securing 527 votes, with his nearest rival, Labour’s Len Jacklin, getting 357.

Also standing were Phillip Trindall, of the UK Independence Party (UKIP), who received 112 votes and Chris Thomas, of the Liberal Democrats, earned 54 votes.

Mr Robinson said: “I am grateful for the people of the area for supporting me and am pleasantly surprised given the current political climate.

He added:” I am an ex-working man, a hands on kind of man and am happy to get the chance to help people.”
