Electrical retailer Hughes is hoping to improve driver efficiency with new in-cab technology in its fleet of delivery vehicles.

Lightfoot has been appointed to install its monitoring devices in the company’s 200 vans and 20 cars, which aim to help drivers practise a smoother and more efficient driving style through real-time audio and visual feedback at the wheel.

Lowestoft-based Hughes was recommended the software by Activa, from whom it leases its fleet, as a way to meet occupational road risk management obligations and cut costs.

During a trial with Hughes the technology reduced higher-risk driver behaviour by 75% and led to fuel savings of 7%.

Service director at Hughes Mark Coleby said: “The impact was instant and impressive. As soon as we had the first report we could see the immediate improvement from our drivers.”

The Lightfoot system will be rolled out across the fleet in the coming weeks.
