Curious members of the public will be given an insight into 17th centaury erotica with a digital display of a play so x-rated it was banned in England.

On Saturday September 15, Lowestoft Record Office will display a digitised version of the original handwritten manuscript called ‘The Farce of Sodom‘, as part of their heritage open day celebrations.

Published anonymously in 1694, the raunchy text holds the dubious accolade of being the first literary work ever to be censored in England on the grounds of obscenity.

Literature expert, Dr Nicholas Nace, said: “The manuscript of The Farce of Sodom held at the Lowestoft branch of the SRO is one of only ten manuscripts of this infamous and highly unusual play in the entire world, and quite possibly the earliest of all ten manuscripts.

The discovery of the unique Lowestoft ‘Sodom’ has completely changed our understanding of how this play circulated in manuscript.”

Lowestoft record office will be open from 10am – 4pm on Saturday 15 September.
