The dedication and courage of volunteer lifeboat crews is being highlighted today as Lowestoft RNLI station throws open its doors to the public as part of its annual SOS Day.

The charity’s biggest national day of fund-raising sees the lifeboat station on South Pier opening to visitors from 10.30am until 3pm – giving people chance to meet some of the crew members.

Subject to operational requirements, there will is an opportunity to look around the 27-year-old Spirit of Lowestoft lifeboat and view information about her proposed replacement.

The crew’s recent call-out to a burning windfarm workboat will feature in a photographic display and there will be a chance to watch a video of the incident, play a tombola and enjoy a range of refreshments.

Items including half-price RNLI Christmas cards, diaries and calendars will be on sale in the gift shop.

Josie Moore, chairman of the local RNLI fund-raising committee, said: “Supporting SOS Day will help keep our lifeboat crew trained and equipped for the year ahead, enabling them to continue to save the lives of others.”
