A 24-year-old man has appeared in court after a teenager was allegedly attacked with a meat cleaver in Lowestoft.

Simon Gibb, of Clapham Road North in Lowestoft, was remanded in custody after being charged with GBH with intent and possession of a meat cleaver in a public place following an incident in the town.

Police were contacted about 1am on Saturday, June 17, after a young man was reportedly attacked with a meat cleaver in Avondale Road. Officers and ambulance personnel attended and a 17-year-old boy was taken to hospital with a serious wound to his shoulder. He has now been discharged from hospital but had to have 17 stitches to suture the wound.

Gibb was arrested a short time later and later charged with unlawfully and maliciously causing grievous bodily harm to the 17-year-old, and threatening behaviour with a meat cleaver in a public place.

He was also charged with assaulting a woman in her 20s by beating on June 16.

Gibb appeared before Norwich Magistrates this morning (Monday, June 19), where he was remanded in custody pending his next court appearance on a date to be confirmed.
