As a keen car boot sale fan, vintage shop owner Nick South is always on the look-out for interesting items – after all, they are the bread-and-butter of his business.

But a recent visit to the regular Arminghall sale produced something truly out of the ordinary. And he almost missed it.

“I just picked up a small box, and the man at the stall said ‘They’re photographs’. But I was just walking off when he added ‘...and they’re of boats’.”

As as a boat owner himself, Nick’s interest was immediately piqued. He lifted the lid of the box and saw they were glass plates. After buying them for £4 – “he wanted £5 originally” – Nick couldn’t wait to get them home to have a good look.

What he found were a series of glass plates, taken in the early years of the last century, perhaps earlier. “All I really know about them is that the seller said they were from a local house clearance.

“I love car boot sales, but I have never seen anything like this before,” said Nick, who runs the Treasure Chest vintage and retro shop at Ludham Bridge (and is also a local DJ). “It’s really exciting. I’m hoping readers will be able to tell me more about them.

“There looks to be a picture in a boatyard, and there is one with a wherry clearly in the background. I am hoping that people might be able to recognise some of the people too.”

Lowestoft readers will recognise the view of the lovely thatched cottage at the entrance to Belle Vue park, a setting which has attracted numerous artists and photographers over the years. So is there a Waveney-area link to the other non-Broads pictures?

Over to you, then, readers...
