A poignant event was held at Lowestoft’s parish church today to remember the hundreds of men from the town who lost their lives in the First World war.

St Margaret’s Church, which is home to the town’s war memorial listing the names of 727 men never returned home in the conflict, was the setting for a memorial event that marked the first full day of Britain’s involvement in the war.

Waveney MP Peter Aldous laid wreaths on the graves in the churchyard of a sailor and soldier who gave their lives for the King and country - G B Smith, a trimmer who died aged 33 on HMS Ganges II in November 1918, and bandsman Robert Fiske, who died aged 18 in 1918 while he served with the 14th Hussars.

Mr Aldous then went into the church to light a candle by the war memorial as veterans from the Royal British Legion and about 20 other people looked on respectfully. The candle will remain lit all week.

To mark the 100th anniversary of the start of war, St Margaret’s Church also rang its bells for two hours. The bells were given to the church to mark the end of the war.

St Margaret’s has also set up a history exhibition, which opened today and runs until Sunday.

It features a mock up of a trench, artefacts such as a gas mask and shell cases, details of Lowestoft war heroes, such as Tom Crisp who won a Victoria Cross, and a recently discovered congregational prayer roll of honour, which had been found rolled up behind the church’s organ.
