A popular cycling initiative, which inspires women and girls to get on their bikes, will return to Southwold next month.

This year’s Women on Wheels (WoW) will take place on Sunday, July 22, and is organised by the Rotary Club of Southwold and District, alongside its new sponsor So Southwold.

WOW events are mass participation female-only bike rides around Suffolk that put a strong emphasis on the fun and friendly aspects of cycling.

Three routes, suiting all abilities, have been designed for the Southwold event, which takes place over seven miles, 18 miles and 30 miles.

They will all start from the William Godell Sports Pavilion with the seven mile route heading to Walberswick, the 18-mile route heading to Shadingfield Fox and the 30-mile route heading to Sotterley.

A spokesman for Southwold Rotary said: “Southwold Rotary are taking it on this year. We want to grow the event and make it a family day out, this year we would like to invite stallholders to offer crafts, games and so forth.

“As it is a charity event, sponsored by So Southwold, we would like to offer stallholders a place for a donation this year as a one off, to help us launch.”

Other attractions are set to include a barbecue, raffle, bar, refreshments, cakes and much more.

The Southwold Rotary spokesman added: “We really want to make this event a much bigger attraction over the next few years.

“We have many riders booked for these rides, as they encourage ladies and girls to get cycling in a non competitive ride, with the hope of perhaps supporting women with joining local cycling groups.”

The third Southwold Women On Wheels ride on July 22 starts at 10am, with registration open at 9am. All riders will receive a medal on completion of the ride, with the event having a strong focus on the fun, friendly and inclusive aspects of cycling.
