Waveney MP Peter Aldous has tonight secured a Commons debate on the floods that last week inflicted severe damage on coastal communities.

The adjournment debate on the subject of ‘Coastal flooding in Waveney’ will take place next Wednesday, December 18, allowing MPs to raise any concerns directly with the government, which a minister will have to respond to.

Mr Aldous said: “It’s important that the matter is considered on the floor of the House before the Christmas Recess as the storm surge has had a significant impact on many coastal communities, not least in Lowestoft.

“There is a strong sense in these communities that Parliament has not yet considered properly this narrowly averted national crisis. We need to establish what went right and also what can be improved upon.”

  • Well good luck with the debate. Defra have been cutting the budget to the Environment Agency for years, and heard today from Environment Agency workers in King's Lynn, that flood defences will not be improved along Norfolk and Suffolk coastline as it would add to the risk of the Thames Barrier being topped. The powers that be would rather we were sacrificed than having to pay to increase the Thames Barrier, but I'm sure you won't be told that in Parliament.

  • Doubt many MPs of all parties know much about the East Anglia coast, and care even less. We have a Metropolitan centres administration. If Islington got flooded and saw the type if damage seen along our coast there would be uproar.. The coatal areas and most of the rural districts are ignored in comparison to the money poured into inner city problems
