Trains between Lowestoft and Norwich were cancelled yesterday afternoon due to a swing bridge failure.

Greater Anglia said the Somerleyton swing bridge, on the Lowestoft to Norwich line, had a fault which stopped trains running between the two towns.

Trains did run between Norwich and Reedham, but some passengers said they were not given enough information and felt stranded in the Norfolk town.

Speaking to BBC Norfolk, one passenger said it took four hours to get from Norwich to Lowestoft, and criticised Greater Anglia’s handling of the issue

The train operator did apologise for the disruption and said: “Two coaches/buses have been resourced and will be in operation from 4.15pm calling at Lowestoft, Oulton Broad North and Norwich only owing to station access. Intermediate stations will be served by taxis.”

Disruption lasted until 6.30pm, affecting the peak commute time for passengers.

Greater Anglia added that any passengers affected by the fault are able to claim compensation for the delay.
