THE landlord of a popular pub in Pakefield admitted they were “still trading” and it was business as usual.

Moves to close the Tramway Hotel at Pakefield and replace it with a new Tesco Express store have angered locals, as it looks increasingly likely that the Lowestoft area is to get a fourth Tesco store.

But this morning pub manager Terry Hunter said that despite suggestions it had already closed its doors, the pub was “still trading.”

And while he admitted it would be a “sad day” if the Tramway Hotel were to close, the situation was “out of his hands.”

Mr Hunter, who has been at the pub for 15 years, said: “We are still trading until further notice.”

Tesco Express said it would be submitting a planning application to Waveney District Council to open at the Tramway Hotel on London Road, Pakefield and would carry out minor changes to the building including a small single-storey rear extension and putting in a cash-machine.

If approved, the store could open in the summer and will create about 20 full-time and part-time jobs.

It will be close to the rival Spar store on Pakefield Street and the Co-operative Foodstore on London Road South.

A Tesco spokesman said the store would be aimed at people in the immediate area, within walking distance.

“This reduces the need for longer trips out of town, particularly for those without a car,” he said.

If the plans win approval, it will become the fourth Tesco in the Lowestoft area – joining the supermarket at Leisure Way in Gunton, the town centre store in London Road North and one at Beccles Road, Carlton Colville.
