An elderly man who died following an incident at his home in Lowestoft on Wednesday has been named as 89-year-old Dennis Nicholls.
Mr Nicholls was found at his home in Kirkley Run with serious injuries shortly before 9pm. He had called police stating he had concerns for his safety.
Despite receiving treatment from paramedics, he died later at the scene.
Following a post mortem examination, the cause of death is unascertained. But the death is being treated as murder.
A 52-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of the man has been detained under the Mental Health Act. She will be detained indefinitely while police carry out their inquiries.
Police and forensic officers were still at the scene of the suspected murder this morning. They could be seen going in and out of the victim’s bungalow.
Parts of the road were cordoned off to all traffic and the public for more than 16 hours immediately following the incident as inquiries were made.
Police search teams and forensic officers scoured the scene for clues, checking in bins, under cars and in the front gardens off a number of homes in the street.
Staff and students making their way to East Point Academy were caught up in the diversions as Kirkley Run was closed in both directions. It was reopened last night.
Suffolk Police referred the incident to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), as there had been recent police contact with the victim.
A spokesman for the IPCC said the investigation was in its very early stages and there was no further information at this stage.
Anyone who was in the area at the time, or who has any information in relation to this incident, is asked to contact Suffolk police on 101.
