After meeting fellow clowns, discussing the best make-up techniques, posing for pictures on Lowestoft seafront and learning about audience reactions, the clown convention is in full swing.

With more performers expected to attend over the coming days, including acts from Belgium and France, the convention is displaying the slapstick humour that traditionally associated with the industry.

Day 2 of the convention will consist of a presentation from Arthur “Vercoe” Pedlar, who was born in 1923 and is a member of the International Clown Hall of Fame. Clowns Bobbo and Smartii will then talk about slapstick humour including how to master trips and falls.

Throughout the day, talks and lectures will focus on the art of timing and delivery, how to connect with the audience through laughter and there will also be the chance to exchange items and props.

Salvo the Clown, who has been performing since 1968 said: “You have got to support these things. I have travelled down from Southend to support Andy and the event he is putting on. It is fantastic.”

Andy the Clown, who has organised the event added: “My concern is that those attending the event get the most from it and have a good time. As long as all of the clowns and people who have taken part are learning something and enjoying themselves then I will be happy. At the moment that is my worry, those who have made the effort to come to Lowestoft need to enjoy themselves.”

Tomorrow evening is the first of the variety shows to be held at The Seagull Theatre.

Tickets range from £7 to £9 and are available in person from the Seagull Theatre Box Office or on 01502 589726.
