More than 70 pupils from across the region have participated in an inter-school boat building challenge.
The youngsters took part in the annual challenge at Lowestoft College on Tuesday, March 28.
The event saw pupils from Ormiston Denes Academy, Bungay High School and Mathematics, East Point Academy, Trafalgar College, Sir John Leman High School, Cliff Park Ormiston Academy, and Pakefield High School rise to the challenge of creating a self-propelled boat from recycled materials.
Working in small groups they brought their ideas to life by designing and constructing a boat that could carry six mini figures.
Before their nautical creations were tested against one another in the swimming pool at the Waterlane Leisure Centre in Lowestoft.
Councillor Mary Rudd, the deputy mayor of Lowestoft, and Ruth Harrison, vice principal at Great Yarmouth College, attended the event and met with students as they undertook the challenge.
Both Ms Rudd and Ms Harrison were also part of the judging panel alongside Matthew Harvey, managing director of Broom Boats, Shaun Wigley, managing director of ASAP Suppliers, Mike Tupper, managing director of International Boatbuilding Training College, Gemma Head from the East of England Energy Group and Matt Knights from the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board.
Cliff Park Ormiston Academy dominated the competition, winning an impressive five awards out of the possible seven categories.
They also took the title of Best Overall Boat of the Day from last year’s winning team from Ormiston Denes Academy.
The inter-school boat challenge is an annual event now in its second year at Lowestoft College.
Supported by local companies, it aims to get students involved with a fun and engaging STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) activity.
Last year five schools participated, this figure rose to seven this year and the event looks set to be even bigger next year.
