The Canaries were understandably disappointed to slip up against Wigan last weekend, but having accumulated 36 points with 10 matches remaining, it’s reasonable to assume that they have secured a top flight berth for next season.

Should this comforting note result in a more open match when they renew acquaintances with Newcastle at St James’ Park on Sunday?

Theoretically it could, though bookies clearly anticipate a comfortable home victory – Norwich kick off as BetVictor’s lengthy-looking 7/2 underdogs to overhaul Alan Pardew’s side.

City beat Newcastle 4-2 at Carrow Road in December, but it’s the Magpies who are installed as William Hill’s 4/5 favourites to avenge that defeat and so maintain their challenge for a European place.

Only Blackburn have kept fewer clean sheets than the Canaries, although conversely, only Manchester United have secured more points away from home in their last five matches than Paul Lambert’s men.

Mindful of this, Ladbrokes post an interesting 8/11 about them retaining a clean sheet in the first half only tomorrow, while Blue Square rate the chances of them keeping Newcastle at bay for 90 minutes as a generous-looking 13/5 shot.

Backers not expecting a glut of goalmouth action may fancy the look of Skybet’s 4/6 for the fixture to yield fewer than 2.5 goals and it should be noted that Betfred’s 15/2 for it to finish goalless has attracted plenty of support.

Yet it could be argued that both sides need to win. Newcastle to maintain their push to finish in the top four, Norwich to attain that sought-after top 10 finish. Accordingly, Boylesports’ 17/4 for City to enjoy a one-goal margin of victory has plenty of appeal, although the same could be said of Stan James’s 8/11 marked in favour of both teams scoring.

Elsewhere, Paddy Power consider the chances of it finishing as a score draw to be as long as 10/3, while for less precise punters, Partybets chalk 23/10 against it.

  • Not often I disagree with media writers but as Benny Hill used to say when you assume you make an (ass) out of (u) and (me). As the American saying goes it's never over till the Fat Lady sings, and the Last whistle has blown. I sincere hope that City comes away with the 3 points, but it appears they seem to be trying to rest on their laurels, I just hope they will be strong enough to hold up Swansea come tomorrow nite.
