That is the opinion of a vast number of Ipswich Town fans, on the basis of an eye-catching poll on our website.

A massive 97% voted in favour of offering midfield sensation Hyam more than just the one-year package that is currently on the table.

Former Town striker James Scowcroft, Suffolk born and bred like local lad Hyam, insisted in Saturday’s EADT that the 20-year-old

former Northgate High School pupil should be offered a longer deal.

And his “tie him down on a longer deal” plea has enjoyed landslide support amongst website readers.

Hyam has been a revelation in recent weeks, playing alongside Andy

Drury in central midfield, and has been a prime reason why Paul Jewell’s men have propelled themselves out of relegation danger and into the safety of mid-table.

His no-nonsense approach – closing down opponents quickly, breaking up rival attacks and intercepting opposing passes – has helped Town to gain the ascendancy in games and rediscover a much-needed backbone.

Hyam produced another superb performance in Saturday’s convincing 3-0 win over Cardiff City, just four days after delivering a

man-of-the-match display in a 1-0 win at Portsmouth.

The result is that Hyam is now one of the first names on Jewell’s teamsheet, while the team have recorded four wins on the bounce and are on the rise.

Which begs the question, raised by Scowcroft – why just a one-year deal?

Why, indeed.

  • For certain this club will be the biggest mug of all if it does not extend his contract considerably

  • Hyam and Drury have been a revelation; they work well together, show energy and keep the ball. These have been qualities singularly lacking. Give them decent contracts and get rid of Leadbitter, Bowyer (and Bullard?) Carlos looked good, JET and Martin real threats. Pub goalkeeper still a problem.

  • Any chance when you refer to results of survey you give the value and not just a percentage. Percentages are misleading as you could get 97% from a 2930 response!

  • James Scowcroft has also suggested that Luke Hyam reminds him very much of a young Matt Holland and if he can replicate his form game after game then he should be on a much longer contract.

  • Hyam like Drury have never really been given a chance now they have been they are showing what they can do saw Hyam a couple of times last saeson and was very impressed with his general play and his work rate is tremendous.Drury went out on loan and came back determined to show what he could do and taken the chance with both hands well done to both of them and long may it continue.

  • He's got 18 mths left, I'd be inclined to keep him hungry to earn a new one. He's doing well in the last few games, but before then played no part and certainly under Keane he started well then faded.

  • I agree with Paul. If we offer the lad a 5 year contract, what happens if he gets a long term injury etc or lacks motivation? By handing him the one year it's simply saying go out there and earn yourself another. Come on you Blues!

  • Old Timer, couldn't agree more with you, me being also a 'moaner'. Whilst it is great to see the team at last producing the goods, there are some who want to give PJ all the credit since he took the flak for the earlier dire performances. Fair 'do's' but I am not at all certain that he has learnt anything since the changes to the younger players were forced on him by injuries to his aged signings. We were also told that there would be no repeat of last years contracts fiasco, but there is. We were also told that they has no need to sell but Wickham went and like you I fear for Carson and Hyam. Still let's enjoy the present while it lasts !!!!!

  • He actually has 18 months left and Jewell has already commented that it would be reviewed in the summer. Luke has only just broken back through into the team after almost 12 months out and was rewarded for that with an extra 12 months on his deal taking it to 2013. If he continues to do well, then by all means offer him a longer deal, but the reason clubs are in trouble is offering 4 year deals to everyone based on very little game time and giving the players very little incentive to continue performing at a high level.

  • Yes - this is precisely why there are still 'moaners' amongst the supporters. We are all naturally delighted with the current form of the team - & pleased that PJ seems to have admitted some mistakes with the Dads Army philosophy & playing a younger team. What we need now to convince us is some acknowledgement that it is the likes of Hyam & Drury who have turned things around - & see them rewarded accordingly. Don't leave it to late - mwhich I suspect might be the case with Carson !!!

  • Haven't seen many mentions of Drury as well as he is also playing on top of his form.
