Wisbech Speed Skaters now have five British champions in their midst after shining at the British Indoor Inline Championships in Maldon.

The 13-strong team travelled to Maldon in Essex for the British Indoor Inline Championships and came home with a host of medals and trophies.

First event of the day was the 100 metre time trials. Seven year old Arthur Buckler charged to the line in an impressive time of 14.678 seconds to win first place and was crowned the first British Champion of the day.

Flynn McGurk from Tilney St Lawrence narrowly missed out on a medal position by one tenth of a second, finishing fourth ahead of team mates Warren Eve and Dylan Taylor.

Eve McInerney was the second team member to be crowned British Champion by winning gold in her time trial with an impressive 12.192 time.

Jo Tidman also from Tilney St Lawrence improved her time from last year, and came in third in the Masters Ladies time trial.

Team coach, Glen Brown achieved an impressive third in the Masters Men time trial following a year out of competitive racing. Team coach Mike McInerney narrowly missed out on a medal by two tenths of a second in the highly spirited senior category.

Buckler became overall British Champion in the Mini Boys category by finishing first in 200m and 500m races, bringing home three gold medals and a trophy. Eve McInerney became overall British champion in the Junior Girls category after finishing first and third in the 500m and 1500m races respectively. Along with her first position in the time trials she brought home gold and bronze medals and a trophy as overall British champion.

More bronze medals were won by Mike McInerney in the Men’s Senior events, and Tidman in the Masters Ladies in the 500m and 1500m.

In the relay races Cadet boys Flynn McGurk and Warren Eve put up an amazing fight, holding a strong second place for 19 laps with Flynn sprinting to the finish line to take the gold making the boys British champions – a first for the club since the cup was awarded in 1961.

The Junior girls’ relay team of Eve and Lucy McInerney also eased to victory.
