Hectic spell of action for Waveney Valley athletes

Sunday saw Waveney Valley’s athletes in action in Ipswich in round four of the Eastern Young Athletes League.

Up against strong opposition from a nuber of clubs Waveney’s U13, U15 and U17 teams put in some good performances.

In the U17 category, Leon Field put in another solid 100m run for second place with another time of 11.5. Field also recorded 23.8 in the 200m and 15.3 in the 100m hurdles.

George Browne (U15) recorded a new personal best in the 1,500m for a strong third place in a time of 4:49.3, an improvement of five seconds of his previous best.

U13s Vaughan Beckham, Seth Frankland, Charles Hardy and Joel Burgess were in action in the sprints. Burgess also contested the 800m which he led from start to finish, registering an impressive 2:34, while he was second in the javelin with 22.86m.

Beckham and Frankland both contested the high jump, with third place finishes in their respective groups.

Waveney’s girls were represented in the U15 events by Abeni Beckham and Abi Mackenzie-Websdale. Beckham contesting the 75m hurdles, high jump and shot put and Mackenzie-Websdale the 100m and long jump.

U13s Kiera Kane, Amber English, Isabella Christmas-Ablett and Ella Newman wore the black vests of Waveney. Kane, making her debut in the high jump ,performed well for third place with 1.25m,with English taking a second in the shot put with 6.26m.

The club held their annual championships over three training nights with U13/U15/U17 and senior athletes contesting the 100m, 200m, 800m/1500m, long jump, high jump, javelin and shot put on a points based system with U11s competing over 80m, 600m, long jump and howler throw.

There were plenty of strong performances, some exceptional racing and athletes contesting events unfamiliar to them.

The final evening concluded with the presentations with the following champions receiving their trophies: U11 girl Agatha Gouldby, U11 boy Thomas Supple and Alfie Caplin, U13 girl Amber English, U13 boy Joel Burgess, U15 girl Abeni Beckham, U15 boy Michael Van-Haren, U17 girl Ellie Newman, U17 boy Leon Field, senior lady Michaela Gooch, senior man Mason Hodds.
