Kirkley & Pakefield made it a nine-match unbeaten run last Saturday at Walmer Road when they overcame their latest opponents Saffron Walden Town 2-0.

Fielding an unchanged starting line-up the Royals had a very competitive first half against a strong, battling Saffron Walden team.

They created a good chance on 28 minutes when a good long through ball from Lewis Hammond found Liam Harvey-Cooper advancing into the area but poor control let hime down. Then, on 37 minutes a well worked move by Tarren Grint, Kyle Baker and Harvey-Cooper saw the latter’s shot gathered by the keeper.

The match changed in the 41st minute when a long through ball down the centre saw Harvey-Cooper challenge the advancing keeper Neil O’Sullivan who blundered, dropping the ball for Liam Harvey-Cooper to tap home. Two minutes later a centre from the left wing by Miguel Lopez saw the away keeper failing to gather the cross, with Kyle Haylock on the spot to knock in number two for the Royals.

After the interval Saffron Walden tested home keeper Adam Rix early on with a good shot which he gathered well before the away keeper did well to foil Baker out in a one-on-one situation.

Harvey-Cooper had a good shot well saved, Baker shot just wide of the post on two occasions and at the other end Wilson blocked a shot from close range.

Young Haylock was doing some sterling work in defending and produced some fine control and mazy runs in attacking.

It was the home team now doing a majority of the pressing but failing to add to their score, although Baker had one ruled out for offside and twice Lopez was refused a penalty after being brought down in the area.

The game concluded with keeper Rix making a good punch-out clearance to keep a clean sheet.

The win took the Royals up to a mid-table 13th position with six wins and three draws and having scored 24 goals in their last nine games.
