Lowestoft Ladies fought hard on Saturday in a game where a win would secure promotion into Suffolk Ladies League Premier Division.

So the team and supporters were ecstatic for the ladies when the whistle blew at full time with a final score of 3-1 to Lowestoft against their Sudbury rivals.

Captain and goalkeeper Jo Pilbrow and defender Vanessa Haig showered the team in champagne after the match to celebrate the promotion achieved with three games still left to play before the official end of the season.

The ladies came out of the blocks fast and determined and midfielders Steph Walker, Desi Reed and Zoe Jackman worked together to take the ball up the pitch to get Lowestoft’s first shots on target. They were soon rewarded with a short corner early on which Judith Masters successfully converted for the first goal of the game.

Play was then from end to end with both teams working hard to keep the ball and attack both goals and after some great defensive play by Emma Walker, Rachel Payne and Vanessa Haig, Lowestoft got a break and Jenn Head scored their second goal to give them some breathing space.

Following that second goal Sudbury fought back and put Pilbrow through her paces as they had a succession of short corners. After a couple of shots on target they were awarded a penalty flick but failed to score.

The second half was tough going and both teams worked hard to put pressure on the respective opposition goalkeepers.

Lowestoft defender Jo O’Neil cleared the ball from the back and got it through to the forwards, Grace Rothon and Head. Head controlled the ball around the D and got it across to Sarah Waller who put it past the goalkeeper to notch Lowestoft’s third goal.

Soon after Sudbury gained possession of the ball and were happy to get on the scoresheet following a short corner for a consolation goal.

The game ended with a short corner for Lowestoft Ladies. The whole team went up to work together and intimidate the Sudbury defence but they were unsuccessful despite their efforts in trying to score their 75th goal of the season to date.

Player of the match was awarded to captain Jo Pilbrow.
