Lowestoft Town needed more belief during AFC Fylde clash

Lowestoft Town joint manager Ady Gallagher feels a lack of a “little bit of belief” prevented his side recording a first away win of the season.

Despite taking on league leaders AFC Fylde on their own patch, Gallagher insisted his side created as many chances as the Conference North table-toppers at Kellamergh Park yesterday.

But, without an away success under their belts and with a depleted squad off the back of a heavy run of games over the festive period, Gallagher said more belief could have propelled his side to a positive result.

“This is our fifth game of the Christmas period on a really heavy pitch, with a long journey and you can see from the squad we’re incredibly stretched,” he said.

“But we’ve come to a team flying high in confidence, unbeaten at home and top of the league and I think we’ve given a decent account of ourselves really and a little bit of belief between the two sides was the difference in the first half.

“When things are going for you and you’re positive you get breaks and when things aren’t going for you and you’re not quite as confident as you could be and you’re stretched, you don’t quite get them sometimes and I think that was the difference in the first half.

“We’ve had three or four really good opportunities to score in the first half where the goalkeeper has made a fingertip save or just got a toe to stop something from going in and unfortunately for us we just haven’t been tight enough in situations and allowed them to score two.”

Gallagher admitted two or three of his players needed reminding of the Lowestoft Town spirit during the interval in a bid to get the visitors back into the match.

“On chances created I think we were right up there today and what was a little bit frustrating, we had two or three lads playing and accepting our fate and that’s really not the Lowestoft Town way,” Gallagher said.

“We addressed that at half-time and I thought the boys gave a really fantastic account of themselves in the second half. We’ve put in a really good shift, created, had a right go and shown bits of quality and if we had a little bit more belief going away from home it could have been different.”

Lowestoft return to action away at Hednesford on Saturday.
