Former Norwich City midfielder Michael Spillane has been included in the Lowestoft Town squad for today’s FA Cup second qualifying round clash at Bognor Regis Town.

The 26-year-old signed a two-and-a-half year deal at Crown Meadow from Sutton United to add to the growing former Canaries contingent at the club.

Spillane becomes the eighth former City player amongst Ady Gallagher’s ranks and the Blues boss believes his signature is a real coup for the club.

“He is a very experienced player for a lad of his age and I’m sure will be prove to be a big player for us,” he said.

“He’s played over 100 times for Sutton United and barely missed a game whilst he’s been there.

“His versatility is something that could give us a lot of options – he’s played a lot of games in central midfield, central defence and as a right back.

“He fits the profile of player that we want at the club – he’s still got years ahead of him and I’m really looking forward to working with him.”

Lowestoft have been busy in the transfer market recently with Spillane following Harry Barker and Harry Burgoyne into the club.

The capture of Burgoyne on loan from Wolves has excited fans at the prospect of more youngsters from the Championship club gaining experience on the east coast.

“It would be great if we could build a relationship with them (Wolves) but Rome wasn’t built in a day,” added Gallagher. “But it is an opportunity and, if Wolves are happy with how he is progressing, there is perhaps scope for some of their other younger players to get some men’s football experience with us.”

Today’s clash at Nyewood Lane will bring back happy memories for many Blues supporters with Lowestoft defeating the Rocks in the play-off semi-final in 2014 before going on to secure promotion.

However, Gallagher insists that performance will have no bearing on events this afternoon.

“It does bring back happy memories but football doesn’t always follow like that,” he said.

“They are on a good run of form at the moment and I’m sure they are delighted to have the opportunity to get a feather in their cap of beating a team from a higher league.

“But we want to stay in this competition as long as we possibly can.”

Lowestoft’s best performance in the cup came in 2009 when the Blues, under the management of Craig Fleming, Micky Chapman and Gallagher, got to the first round proper and lost to Wrexham. Gallagher admits he would love to go on another run.

“That’s the best we’ve ever done but I want to better that,” said the Blues chief.

“I want to push the boundaries of everything this club has done in the past.”
