Norfolk Cricket League: Plenty still to be decided in final weekend of the season

PUBLISHED: 06:30 26 August 2015

Archant Norfolk.

The penultimate week left many issues to sort out at both the top and bottom of many of the divisions.

Happisburgh, already Division One champions, lost for the second week running thanks mainly to Matt Jubb’s unbeaten 78 for East Harling.

Belton and Felthorpe in second and third are one point apart, Abdul Rehman’s 149 helped them defeat Kirkley and Lowestoft Railway, whilst Satish Chelladurai took 7-25 as Felthorpe restricted Blundeston to 94, which they knocked off for the loss of two wickets.

In Division Two Saxlingham took charge at the top as Dave Adams made 54* and Alex Browne made 58 and took 6-15 against Sprowston B. Drayton overtook Eaton, who lost to St Andrews, to move into second after demolishing a depleted Costessey side. Tim Hales made 89 for Gt Melton B and U13 Finlay Hughes took four wickets as they beat Garboldisham B.

Ketteringham Hall’s Jonathon Webb made 65 in their tie with Norwich Bystanders.

In Three East Rob Bingham made 71* and 14-year-old Jack Van Portvliet took four wickets as they beat Hales and Loddon A. Paul Websdale made 52* and took 5-35 in Frettenham’s win over Bungay A. Gillingham (Jordan Barber 69*) moved back into second despite losing to Winterton A (Bryn Clarke 79) as Ashmanhaugh and Barton Wanderers lost to champions Overstrand by eight runs.

In the middle of the table Ryan Saddler (71) helped Old Catton to 135, but Rich Edwards with 80* and Julian Dismore with 53* made short work of the chase.

In Three West there was a morale boosting win for Hingham at Great Melton C. The top of the table is still congested, Hardingham still in the hunt after beating the morning’s leaders Reepham and Salle, who are now equal on points with North Elmham who beat Swanton Morley. Saham Toney are also still in with a chance at the top after beating Hethersett & Tas Valley C.

In Four East, Halvergate still remain unbeaten and top the table after winning against Kirkley and Lowestoft Railway A, but Acle refuse to throw in the towel after 14-year-old Alex Quinton’s 89 helped them overcome Lowestoft B.

In Four West, Great Ellingham and New Buckenham continue to lead the way, Ellingham beating Garboldisham C and New Buckenham completely overwhelmed Colney. Hugh Collier made 50* and under-15 James Barlow took 4-16 as they defeated Norwich Bystanders A.

Many issues still need to be sorted out next week, meaning no side can let up in their quest for survival or success.

This was a clear battle between the exuberant youth and pace of Southwold and the canny experience of the older and bigger Crusaders team, who, despite the scoreline, put the hosts under great pressure several times in the game.
