Home favourite Rebecca Field will not let nerves get the better of her when she steps on to the World Rink at Potters.

The Norfolk Bowling Club sensation, aged 25, lifted the Ladies’ Matchplay Crown at the 2013 World Indoor Bowls Championships and fell just short of repeating the feat last year.

Yet despite getting ready to make her fourth appearance at the showcase event in Hopton-on-Sea, the Norwich player admits the butterflies will still be as strong as they were when she made her WIBC bow in 2012.

“There’s always a few that come down from my club in Norwich and they really enjoy coming along knowing there’s someone they really, really want to win on the carpet,” said Field.

“This is the place where I’ll get the most nervous all year. But I would be worried if I wasn’t nervous and it’s how you use those nerves to your advantage, rather than to a disadvantage, which hopefully I do successfully.

“It’s even up to an hour before I’m really, really nervous. There’s always that chance I could come out here and play like I haven’t played before. I know it’s not going to happen and that’s what I have to keep telling myself.

“I know that I’m good enough to be here, I’ve won it before, and I can do it again. But it’s just about reassuring yourself.”

The Norwich City fan lost an East Anglian derby final against Ipswich’s Katherine Rednall 12 months ago. The two are strongly tipped to challenge for honours again after being placed on opposite sides of the draw.

“You learn as much from losing as you do winning,” said last year’s runner-up who plays her first-round game against Laura Thomas on Saturday, January 17.

“I know what went wrong and hopefully that won’t happen again this year.”
