Lowestoft Town were beaten 2-0 by the under-21 squad of League One club Southend United in their latest pre-season game at Crown Meadow.

Former Lowestoft loanee Nico Cotton opened the scoring in the 12th minute, tapping in from close range after keeper Ben Dudzinski was unable to keep hold of a cross from an unnamed trialist.

Michael Klass hit the bar for the Shrimpers in the 19th minute but found his range to double the visitors’ lead five minutes later, lobbing a stranded Dudzinski from 25 yards. The former Hartlepool United academy keeper made two further saves before the break and the hosts defended well in the second half.

Lowestoft continue their preparations at Gorleston on Tuesday (7.45pm), with their Bostik League Premier Division campaign starting at Leatherhead on Saturday, August 12.

Lowestoft starting XI: Dudzinski, Barker, Humphrey, Fisk, Westlake, Leacock, White, Zielonka, Reed, Greenleaf, Bammant.
