Norwich United show no signs of giving up top spot during their 7-0 demolition of Ely City.
Matt Blake – the league’s leading scorer – took his tally to 20 for the season with a hat-trick, with Ben Thompson (two), Ross Durrant and Lee Mason completing the rout.
Victory leaves the Planters nine points clear of Godmanchester Rovers and, if they wanted an omen, they have one – Hadleigh United had the same sort of lead a year ago, and they went on to win the title.
Damian Hilton’s Norwich side might have had a bigger lead had Thetford been able to hold on for a draw at Godmanchester. The hosts took a 2-0 lead but were pegged back to 2-2, only to snatch a late winner through Jamie Blackwell.
There was disappointment for coastal rivals Gorleston and Kirkley & Pakefield. Gorleston were beaten 2-1 at home by Whitton United, while the Royals went down 2-1 at Brantham Athletic.
It was another disappointing result for Gorleston against lowly opposition in front of their largest league crowd of the season – 159. Whitton took the lead after half an hour and, with Gorleston pushing for an equaliser, doubled their advantage with nine minutes remaining. Gorleston pulled a goal back in time added on through Chad Pillar, but it was too little, too late for the Greens, who have now won just once in their last five league games.
Kirkley’s goal at Brantham came from Ross King, while Fakenham were grateful for Lee Day’s injury-time equaliser at Newmarket.
Bottom club Diss were thumped 5-1 at neighbours Walsham-le-Willows, who moved out of the bottom three.
In the First Division, King’s Lynn Town Reserves were beaten 1-0 at Long Melford, who are back on top in the ever changing leadership race.
Downham Town were beaten 1-0 at Saffron Walden.
Great Yarmouth Town moved their fixture to Friday night in an attempt to attract more fans, and a crowd of 80 saw them beat Dereham Reserves 3-1.
