Champions Norwich United recorded their biggest win of the season to extend their lead at the top of the Premier Division.

The Planters opened up a three-point gap over their nearest rivals, now Godmanchester Rovers, after Felixstowe & Walton United dropped to third by drawing at Gorleston.

A first-half Andy Eastaugh goal before the break set the Planters on their way with Matt Blake’s brace and a strike from Jamie Speller sealing the 4-0 victory which pushed Whitton United into the bottom three. Damian Hilton’s men’s previous best in the early stages of their title defence came courtesy of a 4-1 home success over Haverhill Rovers on August 22.

While the table-toppers were shining on the road, Felixstowe were finding life hard on the east coast against a Gorleston side who are now unbeaten in five matches. Ricci Butler’s Greens went behind before Joel Watts ensured his side got a share of the spoils against the high-fliers – who ended the match with 10 men after visiting goalscorer Miles Powell’s second-half dismissal for seemingly throwing an elbow in the direction of a home player.

Swaffham Town kept up their encouraging start following promotion by drawing 0-0 at fellow top-flight new-boys Saffron Walden Town in front of a bumper crowd of 239. Kirkley & Pakefield looked set to achieve the same result at Newmarket Town, fourth, but were denied a point by an injury-time winner.

It was another miserable afternoon for struggling Thetford Town and Fakenham Town, both beaten convincingly on the road. The latter – one off the bottom – netted through Shaun Hunsdon but were thumped 4-1 at Long Melford as the former shipped one goal less at FC Clacton.

The basement boys were 1-0 up at the break, thanks to Ashley Jarvis, but crashed to an 11th league defeat out of 12 by conceding three times during the second period.

The biggest surprise of the day perhaps came in the First Division where Great Yarmouth Town lost their first away game of the season at perennial strugglers Cornard United. The Bloaters were 3-0 down at the interval but could only net twice as their comeback fell just short.

That defeat saw Yarmouth fall four points off pacesetters Wivenhoe Town who maintained their unbeaten start with a 2-0 victory at home to Downham Town.

King’s Lynn Town Reserves powered up to third by dismantling Diss Town 5-2. The hosts’ win was secured by Dylan Edge (2), Ciaran Beales, Matty Castellan and Robert Palmer finding the net.

Dereham Town Reserves picked up a point drawing 1-1 at Woodbridge Town.
