Southwold Rugby Club hosted its inaugural Under-21/University Returners Festival on Easter Sunday.

The club laid on a beer festival and barbecue to support the event, and around 80 players from Colchester, Hadleigh, Diss and Southwold took part.

Each team played each other and after two rounds, all four teams had won and lost one game each, with only one score separating each team.

After the group stages Colchester beat Hadleigh 19-0 in the third/fourth place play-off, with Southwold reversing their earlier 10-7 defeat against Diss to win 17-5 and claim the Southwold Cup.

Ross Cowie of the Eastern Counties RFU, who were also behind the event, presented the trophy to Southwold skipper Tom Debenham and thanked all players and their clubs for supporting the new event and for a great day’s rugby. The plan is for this to become an annual event, and he hoped others clubs would support it in the future.
