A FRUITFUL relationship is set to continue in Lowestoft tomorrow evening as the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra embarks on the eighth year of its residency at the town’s Marina Theatre.

The orchestra (RPO) will be starting its 2012 season with a gala concert in support of the independent trust which took over the running of the theatre last year from Waveney District Council.

Over the previous seven years, the prestigious residency has brought internationally-renowned musicians, soloists and conductors to Lowestoft – with the link hailed as one the most successful of its kind throughout the UK.

Martin Halliday, chief executive of the Marina Theatre Trust, said: “We are extremely proud of our association with the RPO.

“It is a great honour that the orchestra has chosen to further extend its residency and shows a great deal of faith in the future of 
the Marina, the trust and its audience.”

The RPO has recently returned from a major month-long tour of the USA and Canada, performing 21 concerts in 18 different venues across nine states, earning .

The performances received rave reviews in the American press. That and the momentum has continued into the orchestra’s recent well-received UK concerts.

Having travelled nearly 18,000 miles in the past month, they are glad to be home and look forward to making the comparatively short journey to Lowestoft for the Marina’s season opening gala concert.

Tomorrow’s opening concert will be conducted by Nicholas Cleobury and will feature international pianist Mark Bebbington.

The programme starts at 7.30pm and includes Rossini’s Italian Girl in Algiers Overture, Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No.1 and Dvorák’s Symphony No.9, From the New World.
