Staff at an Asda superstore in Suffolk are set to vote on industrial action.

A consultative ballot of nearly 200 GMB members at the Lowestoft store in Belvedere Road found that 90pc, of the 80pc turnout, were ready to strike.

It follows industrial action at the Asda store in Gosport and strike votes at stores in Wisbech and Brighton.

Keith Dixon, GMB regional organiser, said staff are facing "cuts to their hours and inadequate training" and are concerned about safety issues.

“Asda has lost its leadership, its direction and management no longer values colleagues, the current state of the company is dire," he added.

The union are set to notify the company this week and the strike vote could begin the week after.

A spokesman for Asda said: "We have established processes in place for colleagues to raise any issues or concerns they may have and we have not received any formal complaints at the Lowestoft store relating to the claims made by the GMB.

“Providing a safe working environment is of paramount importance to us and if colleagues have any safety-related concerns we would ask these are brought to the attention of a manager immediately so they can be investigated and promptly resolved.”
