Two of the world's eight remaining wherries are to sail together on Oulton Broad.

The pleasure wherry Ardea and the wherry yacht White Moth are usually based in Wroxham but will sail to Oulton Broad, near Lowestoft, for two days on May 31 and June 1.

The historic vessels belong to Wherry Yacht Charter Charitable Trust and their skippers, crews and maintenance teams all consist of volunteers.

During the visit, Ardea - the largest vessel in the charity's fleet - will moor outside the Harbour Office and will be open for the public to view.

White Moth will also be open and offering short sailings across the broad from the yacht station.

It will be the first time in 20 years that White Moth has been at the Suffolk broad.

The 50 minute trips will set off hourly between 10am and 5pm each day.

Tickets can be booked online and will cost £20 for adults and £10 for children.

All proceeds will help the charity in its work to restore, maintain and operate five of the last eight remaining wherries in the world.

Andrew Scull, chair of trustees, said: “Gliding across the water under the sail of a wherry yacht is the most relaxing way to travel on the Broads.

"The vessels were purpose-built over 100 years ago to provide passengers with a comfortable and calming mode of transport – and that is still true today.

"It is nearly 20 years since White Moth has sailed on Oulton Broad and we are expecting there to be a lot of interest in the trips from local people and visitors.

"By buying tickets for one of the sailings, passengers will be helping us in our mission of keeping history sailing for future generations.”
