A MAN was airlifted to hospital today (Friday) after severing his arm with a chainsaw while trimming hedgerow.
Doctors were flown to the scene in Knodishall, near Saxmundham, to give life-saving first aid to the man who had lacerated an artery in his left arm after losing grip of the chainsaw.
The horrific incident happened at the man's house in Saxmundham Road at about 11am today.
The doctors, from medical charity Magpas, applied a tourniquet and administered pain relief and antibiotics before escorting the victim to the Norfolk and Norwich Hopital in the East Anglian Air Ambulance.
The man, believed to be 40 years old, was in a stable condition, but medics said his condition was 'limb-threatening, but stable'.
Deborah Florence, spokeswoman for Magpas, said 'Thanks to the very sophisticated training Magpas volunteer doctors and paramedics receive, our emergency medical team were able to deliver an advanced level of pre-hospital medical care at the scene.
'It is through our working partnerships with the East of England Ambulance Trust and the East Anglian Air Ambulance charity that we are able to deliver such a rapid and co-ordinated response in these circumstances.'
