IN reply to Elaine Golledge (August 21) who says that some pet owners think the world revolves around them when they complain about fireworks I would like to say that anyone who keeps animals, especially dogs or horses, will know how terrified they are of sudden, loud noises.

I find enjoyment in having my dog share my life - why should my rights of enjoyment be spoiled by seeing him in abject fear because of these unexpected ear-shattering reports, and feeling helpless because I can't pacify him?
Keep them for Guy Fawkes or New Year, or why not stick to spectacular, colourful displays without the bangs.
When people can't celebrate without inflicting excess noise on others, usually late in the evening, then I'm speechless too.
