LOWESTOFT Lifeboat was kept busy with two separate call-outs in the space of a few hours yesterday.

The lifeboat was called to the aid of a swimmer and a yacht in the two separate incidents on Tuesday (July 28).

The crew was called out at 4.45pm to aid a crew of three on a Dutch yacht who had requested assistance in deteriorating weather a few miles off the town. The lifeboat crew went out to tow the yacht into Lowestoft harbour.

It was the second call-out of the day for the volunteer RNLI crew, after a request at lunchtime by Great Yarmouth Coastguard to locate a swimmer between the harbour entrance and Claremont Pier, before being able to confirm that he did not need help.

Mike Richford, Lowestoft lifeboat's press officer, said: 'Anyone who sees a person or vessel in difficulty should immediately dial 999 and ask for Coastguard. It is important not to assume someone else will have done so, or to leave it and regret it later.'
