A CAMPAIGN to clamp down on cyclists committing offences in Lowestoft has been hailed as a success.

Police stopped more than 50 cyclists and issued warnings during a four-day campaign in London Road South.

Officers from the Central Lowestoft Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) carried out the campaign at the end of January to tackle one the team's priorities of pedal cyclists committing offences on the road.

During the campaign, SNT officers targeted cyclists who were riding with no lights at night, riding on the footway and riding the wrong way up a one-way street. 53 cyclists were subsequently stopped and issued with warnings, with the majority aged over 16.

After concerns had been raised by locals that cyclists were committing offences, this has become one of the Central Lowestoft SNT's priorities.

Police Constable Cris Beavers said: 'We were pleased with the results of this campaign and it appears that the message has been received, as no-one was stopped more than once and hence no fixed penalty notices or reports for summons were needed.

'However it has become clear as a result of this campaign that the issue of pedal cyclists committing offences will need continued policing attention in the future. Many people who were stopped were not aware that it was illegal to cycle on the path or without lights at night.

'We are therefore looking into future ways to educate cyclists in the area to reduce this problem and increase their safety,' PC Beavers added. 'We are asking all cyclists to consider that a basic set of lights does not cost a lot of money and it could save your life.'
