A Suffolk town has been sent a card of thanks from King Charles III after its mayor sent condolences following the death of the Queen.

The mayor of Lowestoft Alan Green had sent a letter of condolence to the King on behalf of townspeople following the death of his mother.

This week, the council was "delighted" to receive a card of thanks in response from King Charles III, who thanked the town and its residents for their "wonderfully generous" sympathies.

He wrote: "It was so very kind of you to send me such a wonderfully generous message following the death of my beloved mother.

"Your most thoughtful words are enormously comforting, and I cannot tell you how deeply they are appreciated at this time of immense sorrow."

King Charles ascended to the throne following the death of his mother on September 8.

Her death led to a wave of tributes up and down the country, including in Lowestoft and surrounding villages.

Ahead of her funeral on September 19, hundreds of people gathered by Lowestoft's seafront to hear the proclamation of the accession of King Charles III read out by the mayor of Lowestoft.

A large crowd turned out at Royal Plain on September 11 as the proclamation was read out at 3.30pm by Mr Green, while remembrance services were held across East Suffolk.

At the time of the Queen's death, the mayor of Lowestoft said: "On behalf of the town of Lowestoft, and councillors and officers of Lowestoft Town Council, I would like to express our deep sadness following the passing of Her Majesty The Queen."

Upon receiving the King's response this week on December 22, a town council spokesman said: "Lowestoft Town Council were delighted to receive this card of thanks from HM King Charles III today on behalf of the people of Lowestoft.
