The official unveiling of new floodlights has been described as a "vital stepping stone in improving the infrastructure" of a non-league football club.

The new £26,000 LED floodlights at Kirkley and Pakefield FC's Walmer Road home ground were unveiled at an official switch-on event on Saturday.

Waveney MP, and club president, Peter Aldous cut a ceremonial ribbon to mark the occasion as supporters and committee members looked on, as the new floodlights were turned on.

The official switch-on of the floodlights came ahead of the Royals' Thurlow Nunn Premier Division match with last season's Division One North champions Sheringham, which the visitors won 2-1.

And the new LED floodlights have received the seal of approval from the players.

Mr Aldous praised "all the hard work" of club members in fundraising and arranging for the new floodlights to be installed "to provide a vital stepping stone in improving the infrastructure of the football club".

The club's vice chairman, Colin Smith, said the floodlights cost £26,000 and had been funded by the Royals' joint venture with the Football Foundation and Suffolk FA - with each contributing a third of the cost.

Mr Smith said: "We were able to use the same posts as our old lights, but we have eight new tops featuring LED lights.

"We had the old lights for 20 years.

"We had a trial run with them against Soham on a dull day and we were very pleased with the illumination that they gave and the comments from the players said how much brighter it was.

"Our old lights broke down two or three times last year and were unreliable in the rain.

"It was costly to get a cherry picker in to replace the bulbs."

Mr Smith said the installation took four days.

He added: "We had to have some new electrics but whereas the old ones had to be switched on individually, these can be more easily switched on and off without waiting for a cooling down period."

The new infrastructure was also hailed by Suffolk FA football development manager and facilities and investment lead, Matt Stebbings.

He said: "Great to be at Kirkley and Pakefield to help officially open the new LED floodlights supported through the Premier League Stadium Fund."
