Staff and pupils at a Lowestoft-area primary school are celebrating after being honoured with a special recognition.

Pakefield Primary School has been awarded the Primary Science Quality Mark (PSQM) in recognition of its commitment to excellence in science teaching and learning.

The school on London Road, Pakefield - which is part of The Active Learning Trust - has been praised for its high expectations of teachers and pupils.

In his review of the school, the PSQM reviewer Ed Walsh said: "The school has been very effective at building on its prior developments and achievements, recognising what it does well and focusing on next steps.

"It is also very good at analysing evidence to judge if developments are working."

A delighted Martyn Payne, the executive headteacher of the primary school, said: "We are so pleased to have been recognised for the high-quality science curriculum at our school.

"Children get very excited about science and enjoy their learning, showing confidence in lessons and beyond."

Mr Payne added: "Our Science Leader is knowledgeable, confident and effective in reflecting on changes in the curriculum that have led to high-quality science in our school."

The PSQM is a one-year school improvement programme for primary science, which provides professional development for new and experienced subject leaders each year.

PSQM enables confident, knowledgeable, reflective leadership which results in an improvement in the way in which science is planned and taught across the whole school.

The Primary Science Quality Mark is led by the University of Hertfordshire in collaboration with the Primary Science Teaching Trust.

With the PSQM mission to transform lives by improving science education in every primary school, for every teacher, for every child, it has been raising the profile and quality of science in thousands of UK primary schools since 2011.
