Officials at a gymnastics club have hailed the community spirit and an "amazing" response to calls for donations after devastating earthquakes hit Turkey and Syria.

The generosity of people across Lowestoft has seen essential items being dropped off at Waveney Gymnastics Club as people rally around in support of those in crisis.

The state-of-the-art gymnastics centre on Notley Road, Kirkley has acted as a 'drop off' point for donations.

And in less than a week, they have been "overwhelmed" with items from the community - so much so that two deliveries of essential aid have already made their way to Turkey.

Hailing the "amazing response", and the community spirit that has been shown with kind donations, the club's head coach Jess Etherington said it had been a "very busy" time.

Mrs Etherington said: "We have got a few ladies that are Turkish and Syrian, whose children are gym members and when one of the mums said could we do a collection - similar to the collection we arranged when the war started in Ukraine - it just snowballed from there.

"Since last Tuesday when we opened it up to the general public we have been quite overwhelmed."

From sanitary wear, bathroom essentials, clothes, shoes, first aid supplies, baby food, nappies, blankets, tents, sleeping bags, dried food and more - numerous items have been boxed up for delivery.

After the first collection went out on a flight from Heathrow, a second lorry load of essential items and equipment left the gym club over the weekend.

Mrs Etherington said: "We have had an overwhelming response from the local community

"It has been really heartwarming, an emotional rollercoaster with everyone rallying round doing something to help others in crisis."

Along with Mrs Etherington, Emma Hughes and gym staff, two mothers of youngsters that attend the club received particular praise - Ilknur Çağlar and Melissa sarı.

Mrs Çağlar said: "It’s amazing how the community has come together to help - so much hard work went into this appeal.

"Word got out and people were more than happy to help - not only the Turkish community but the whole of Lowestoft, Norwich, Yarmouth and people elsewhere travelled to donate - as Waveney gym club opened up their space for us.

"The Mermaid fish bar and Oli Food Centre in Oulton Broad helped out in lending their vans, Tan Republic helped out and so many people offered support - we want to say a big thank you to every single person that helped in any way in just a few days."

With the Lowestoft Dunelm store having also been a drop-off point for donations over the past week, collection buckets are in use at East of England Co-op stores - with 100pc of the donations going to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) Turkey-Syria Earthquake Appeal.
