Aspiring local bands are getting the chance to take to the stage as a new collaboration aims to bring more live music back to Lowestoft.

The Seagull Theatre in Pakefield and Lowestoft Live will be holding monthly gig nights to promote grassroots music and highlight talented local bands in the town.

The first of these events at the Seagull Theatre will be on April 6 when local groups Kuiper and Jehenna perform with the opening slot going to Greg Hall.

Tickets for the gig will cost £5, with 100pc going directly to the bands themselves.

Kuiper met at a music workshop in April last year and gelled straight away. They decided to form a band and practice weekly.

The band have played some key venues in Norfolk and Suffolk such as B2 and the Empire and are heading to Cambridge in June to play at Strawberry Fields Festival.

Their influences include the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Foo Fighters and Blur.

Jehenna are a Norfolk-based band for fans of Paramore, Evanescence, Flyleaf, and other alternative rock music.

Greg Hall is a singer-songwriter and producer based near Lowestoft who plays a mixture of acoustic rock covers and his own original compositions.

Karen Read, Seagull Theatre manager, said: “The Seagull has always been committed to encouraging local talent, and we are really excited to be able to increase this support through our work with Lowestoft Live."

Isaac Lister from Lowestoft Live said he is “acutely aware of the need for good venues for musicians to develop their skills and get experience” and that these events will provide “a wonderful showcase for bands in particular”.

The Seagull Theatre is also staging The Medieval Miracles, a retelling of ancient mystery plays from the fifteenth century, on April 4.
