The final two southern side sections of the £126.75m Gull Wing bridge have arrived in Lowestoft.

Another significant milestone has been marked as the latest steel sections of the long-awaited third crossing arrived via a barge from Belgium at about 4pm on Wednesday.

These final two steel sections - the last two South Approach Viaduct (SAV) sections of the bridge - arrived at the construction site on Lake Lothing on a barge from Ghent in Belgium.

The barge featuring SAV2 - which is 30m long and weighs 90 tonnes - and SAV4 - which is 45m long and 381 tonnes - featured the "the final two viaducts" that have been made by Victor Buyck Steel Construction in Belgium.

It comes after sections 1 and 3 arrived at the construction site in Lowestoft from Ghent on April 23, SAV3 was moved on to a temporary base before SAV1 was directly lifted into position on the Southern Approach Abutment and Pier 1.

With one of the biggest cranes of its kind in the world helping to lift the huge steel sections involved in the construction of the third crossing, the crawler crane Terex Demag CC8800-1 was installed on the southern side of Lake Lothing to move the sections.

It has a maximum lifting capacity of 1,600 tonnes.

With leading building and civil engineering contractor Farrans constructing the bridge for Suffolk County Council, a Gull Wing spokesman said: "In the coming days, SAV2 will be offloaded directly onto Piers 1 and 2, and SAV3 will then be picked up from the temporary base and placed onto Piers 2 and 3.

"Finally, SAV4 will be lifted directly from the barge onto Piers 3 and 4.

"Once in place, a site weld and bolted splices will secure the four sections to each other.

"A concrete pour will then set the viaduct in its final position."
