Scouts, Cubs and Beavers together with Explorer Scouts from across the Lowestoft district have spent nights under canvas for the first time since Covid.

With their campsite at Herringfleet in the delightful, wooded setting on the edge of Fritton Lake usually used for Scouts from individual groups to pitch their tents - last weekend it saw more than 300 boys and girls and their leaders from seven groups enjoy the adventure of all camping together.

Assistant District Commissioner for Scouts, Harry Emmerson, said: "It is great to have all sections of the district scouting family camping together.

"It has taken a lot of work and we have had to take over an adjacent field to accommodate the 200 tents and kitchen areas - which were erected a couple of days beforehand.

"The weather couldn’t have been better and was near perfect for camping and the youngsters have enjoyed a wide range of activities.

"These have included all the popular adventure pursuits, but we have also introduced some new entertainment as well including Laser Tag, an outdoor cinema and Sumo suits.

"We had age-appropriate activities for the younger members such as bouncy castles, water rockets, birds of prey, crafts and a visit from Potty Paul the Clown - as well as trips on an electric boat from Fritton Lake.

"Then for the older children there was archery, canoeing, paddleboarding, rowing, rifle shooting, a water slide and monkey-bridge, as well as a climbing wall and an evening silent disco using headphones.

"The traditional camp fire on a perfect Saturday evening had everyone joining in with singing traditional scouting songs at the tops of their voices and included the presentation of a Silver Acorn award to retired District Commissioner Mel Buck.

"The scout movement in the Lowestoft District is very lucky to have access to such a wonderful site.

"We also have brilliant leaders and helpers who assist with all the activities to ensure that all our boys and girls have a thoroughly enjoyable time."
